Queer Disability Studies

What Are The Intersections?

Deadline for application: April 5, 2012

Location: Centre For Transdisciplinary Gender Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany
Time: June 6-8, 2012
Maximum number of participants: 10

Course description:

This three-day course will have three parts: the first will be a very brief introduction to queer theory and disability studies with canonical readings and claims from each. Then we will discuss work at the intersection of these two fields from the last four years, attending to their relationship to globality/globalization and structures of race, as well as to their historical co-formations. This set of readings often usefully insists upon intersectionality as a framework for approaching queer disability studies. The final section will explore work that uses affect studies and other models to reapproach – and sometimes revise – feminist models of intersectionality.

The course invites PhD students. It gives 7,5 ECTS Credits for active participation and a short paper, and 15 ECTS Credits for active participation and an essay.

Teacher:

Mel Y. Chen is Assistant Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at U.C. Berkeley and an affiliate of the Center for Race and Gender, the Science and Technology Studies Center, and the Institute for Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences.
